Eligibility Requirements

Motability is a scheme that is open to those who receive War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement or the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA). Even if you are not a driver, you can mild apply for a car as a passenger and choose two other people who will drive for you. As a parent, you can also apply on behalf of a disabled child aged three or above, provided they are receiving the higher rate component of DLA and appoint yourself the designated driver for your child.

Contract Hire

The contract hire scheme allows eligible participants to lease a unique car that is supplied by a Motability dealer for at least three years. Contract hire includes car insurance, car serving (routine work) as well as breakdown assistance, free of charge. However, you may be liable for fitting and removing car adaptations. To qualify for contract hire, you must have at least 12 months of DLA remaining. If DLA is not renewed by the length of the contract hire period, the car must be returned. Once your contract hire period is over with, the car must be returned to Motability.

Hire purchase is a scheme that many prefer over contract hire. Hire purchase allows drivers to buy a new or used car of their choice. But unlike hire grasp, you are solely responsible for negotiating the price with the dealership and providing your own car insurance cover.
